Petrochemicals (sometimes known as petchems) are chemical compounds derived from petroleum refining. Some petroleum-derived chemical compounds are also derived from other fossil fuels, such as coal or natural gas, or renewable sources, such as maize, palm fruit, or sugar cane.

Petrochemical products are ubiquitous and essential to modern society. Plastics, fertilisers, packaging, textiles, digital gadgets, medical equipment, detergents, tyres, and a variety of other materials are among them. They may also be found in many aspects of the current energy system, including as solar panels, wind turbine blades, batteries, building thermal insulation, and electric car parts.

The Future of Petrochemicals examines the implications of rising demand for these goods, as well as what we can do to speed the petrochemical industry's transition to clean energy.
